Bio
While Willson started in with clay, her career shifted into arts administration and the nonprofit sector, leading visual arts organizations in North Carolina and Tennessee. She began the exploration of sculptural weaving and the random weave process in 2010 and maintained a side art practice while still in the nonprofit sector.
In 2016, Willson returned to North Carolina and to the studio. First working at Litmus Studios and Gallery in Raleigh, NC, she took her random weave “to the wall,” developing a body of nests and pods that integrated reed with natural materials. She later began creating random weave dresses, exploring the articulation of personality and personal history through the form. From 2019 - 2021, Willson presented her works in four solo exhibitions and several group exhibitions.
Moving her studio into Anchorlight in early 2022, Willson’s work shifted to include a broader range of materials and forms. Most recently, she’s developed a small series around frames, working through the tension of “chaotic” randomness and a straight, hard edge.
